Athens Authentic Marathon
Athens Authentic Marathon
The Athens Authentic Marathon is much more than a 42.195 km race. It connects modern runners with one of the most famous events in ancient Greek history: the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC.
Unlike most marathons around the world, the Athens Authentic Marathon follows a route associated with the original legend, beginning in Marathon and finishing in Athens, at the historic Panathenaic Stadium.
The Battle of Marathon – 490 BC
In 490 BC, the Persian Empire, ruled by King Darius I, launched an invasion of Greece. Persian forces landed on the plain of Marathon, approximately 40 km northeast of Athens.
The Athenians, supported by soldiers from the small city-state of Plataea, confronted the much larger Persian army.
Under the leadership of the Athenian general Miltiades, the Greeks achieved a remarkable victory.
Interesting fact: The Battle of Marathon became a powerful symbol of Athenian independence and resistance to Persian expansion.
The Legend of Pheidippides – The First Marathon Runner
According to a famous legend, after the Greek victory, a messenger ran from Marathon to Athens to announce the news. Upon reaching the city, he reportedly exclaimed:
“Νενικήκαμεν!” (Nenikēkamen!) – “We have won!”
He then collapsed and died from exhaustion. This dramatic story inspired the modern marathon.
However, there is an important historical distinction:
The ancient historian Herodotus, writing closer to the events, describes a messenger named Philippides (often called Pheidippides) running from Athens to Sparta before the battle to request military assistance.
The story of the victory messenger running from Marathon to Athens appears in later ancient sources, and the messenger’s name varies.
Interesting fact: The historically recorded Athens-to-Sparta mission was approximately 240 km, far longer than a modern marathon.
The Birth of the Modern Marathon – Athens, 1896
When the first modern Olympic Games were organized in Athens in 1896, a new long-distance running event was introduced to commemorate the ancient legend.
The race began in Marathon and finished at the Panathenaic Stadium.
The winner was Spyridon Louis, a Greek water carrier from Marousi, who completed the race in approximately 2 hours, 58 minutes, and 50 seconds.
His victory became one of the most celebrated moments of the first modern Olympic Games.
Interesting fact: The first Olympic marathon was approximately 40 km long, not today’s standard 42.195 km.
Why Is a Marathon Exactly 42.195 km?
Surprisingly, the official marathon distance was not established in Greece.
During the 1908 London Olympics, organizers designed the course to begin at Windsor Castle and finish in front of the royal box at London’s White City Stadium.
The resulting distance was 42.195 km (26 miles and 385 yards).
In 1921, this distance was officially standardized for international marathon races.
Interesting fact: The extra 2.195 km compared with the original 1896 Olympic marathon resulted from the London course arrangements, not the distance supposedly covered by the ancient messenger.
The Panathenaic Stadium – The Most Historic Finish Line
The Panathenaic Stadium, also known as Kallimarmaro (“beautifully marbled”), is one of the world’s most iconic sporting landmarks and the unforgettable finish line of the Athens Authentic Marathon.
Its history dates back to the 4th century BC, when it hosted athletic competitions during the ancient Panathenaic Games. In the 2nd century AD, the stadium was magnificently rebuilt in marble by Herodes Atticus, giving it the remarkable appearance that inspired its name.
Centuries later, the stadium was restored to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, when Greek runner Spyridon Louis made history by winning the inaugural Olympic marathon. It also welcomed marathon runners during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, connecting ancient sporting traditions with the modern Olympic movement.
Today, the Panathenaic Stadium remains the spectacular finish line of the Athens Authentic Marathon. After 42.195 km of determination and endurance, runners enter the same historic stadium where Olympic marathon history began in 1896, making the final moments of the race a truly unforgettable experience.
The Marathon Returned to Its Olympic Roots in 2004
When Athens hosted the Olympic Games in 2004, the marathon returned to its historic birthplace.
The Olympic race followed the Marathon-to-Athens route, ending inside the Panathenaic Stadium.
Italian runner Stefano Baldini won the men’s marathon, while Japanese runner Mizuki Noguchi won the women’s race.
The event connected the ancient legend, the first modern Olympics in 1896, and the modern Olympic movement.
The Modern Athens Authentic Marathon Began in 1972
The annual event originally known as the Athens Classic Marathon began in 1972.
Since the early 1980s, the race has also honored Grigoris Lambrakis, a Greek athlete, physician, peace activist, and member of parliament who was assassinated in 1963.
Today, the event brings together runners from around the world and includes the classic marathon, shorter races, and associated celebrations.
The Marathon Route
The Athens Authentic Marathon (42.195 km) is considered one of the more challenging major road marathons because of its long uphill sections, particularly between approximately kilometers 11 and 31.
Unlike flat marathons such as Berlin, Chicago, or Valencia, Athens combines sustained climbing, exposed roads, and a fast downhill finish.
For runners, the greatest challenge is not simply the total elevation gain, but where the climbing occurs: much of it comes after the first 10 km, when fatigue is beginning to build.
Elevation:
The Athens Authentic Marathon is a challenging 42.195 km course, featuring approximately 330– 350 meters of total elevation gain. The first 10 km are relatively flat, followed by a series of uphill sections, with the most demanding climbs between kilometers 20 and 31. The course reaches its highest point at approximately 250 meters above sea level, before descending toward central Athens. The final kilometers are mostly downhill, leading to an unforgettable finish inside the historic Panathenaic Stadium.
Route breakdown:
0– 10 km | Mostly flat
The race begins in Marathon, passes around the historic Marathon Tomb and continues toward Nea Makri. The first 4 km are slightly downhill, followed by relatively flat roads
10– 20 km | Rolling hills
The first significant climbs begin around kilometer 11. There is a downhill section before Rafina junction, followed by a more demanding ascent approaching kilometer 20.
20– 31 km | Hardest section
This is the defining challenge of the Athens Marathon. Long uphill stretches continue through Pikermi and Pallini, with particularly demanding climbing near kilometers 25, 27–28 and 30–31.
The final climb toward Stavros junction is the most difficult section according to the official route description.
31– 38 km | Predominantly downhill
After Stavros, runners descend toward Agia Paraskevi and follow Mesogeion Avenue into Athens. The route alternates between downhill and flatter sections.
38– 42.195 km | Final descent and finish
Runners pass the American Embassy, Athens Concert Hall and National Garden before approaching the Panathenaic Stadium.
The final approximately 170 meters take place inside the historic stadium.
